Celebrate with us

Each year, we eagerly anticipate gathering together to celebrate what God has done the previous year in the HOPE network and looking ahead to the year to come. Given the impact of the coronavirus, and out of care for each of our stakeholders, we feel it’s wise to transition in-person gatherings, including our annual OC Investing in Dreams Dinner and Auction, to virtual events. This year, for the first time ever, HOPE’s California community will get to gather with supporters across the state to hear from HOPE International leadership and join forces to make an impact on families around the world!

We welcome you to engage in our fun and interactive conversation, featuring HOPE International’s president and CEO, Peter Greer; national board member Lance Wood; and California regional representatives. We’ll explore the historic impact of HOPE’s California supporters, and in the California community to pray, participate, and partner with HOPE in order to equip families around the world to thrive in the wake of the pandemic.

We’ll explore the historic impact of HOPE’s California supporters, and invite the California community to …

JoyPublicity1-resized.jpg

Joy Ike

Musician

Polished and precise, yet buoyed with an airy grace, Joy Ike paints with a broad palette that defies easy categorization. Born to Nigerian immigrants, the singer/songwriter’s music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, and Regina Spektor. But her percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals give homage to her African upbringing.

Leaving her career as a publicist in 2008, Joy has spent the last 10 years playing thousands of shows across the country. A write-up on NPR’s All Things Considered says “The depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop…a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small.”

Ike is currently on tour in support of her new album Bigger Than Your Box. Written over a four-year period that included a relocation from the comparatively small Pittsburgh to the gritty, thrumming metropolis of Philadelphia, the record is joyously defiant, standing proud and wrapped in blasts of exotic color. It dares us to believe in ourselves, to knock down the walls of fear and doubt we build around ourselves. “This is an open-armed invitation to dive head first into the unseen”, says Ike. Bigger Than Your Box boldly explores what Ike often refers to as divine discontentment; the restless middle ground between what is and what ought to be. “The spiritual mystery of life and the ever-present Spirit of God that embraces us in our most helpless state.”

California virtual experience FAQ

Though we cannot physically gather, we want to provide an opportunity for individuals, families, and small groups of friends throughout California to watch HOPE’s global virtual event in unison. Given that the global event will be broadcast at a time that may not be convenient for CA participants, we are hosting a special 30-minute interactive Zoom event for CA viewers only.

We encourage you to tune in to our live Zoom event at 6:30 p.m. (a 10-minute warm-up video will run starting at 6:20 p.m. to enable participants to test their equipment so they won’t miss the fun). The 30-minute Zoom event will include interactive games and polling and updates from Peter Greer and Lance Wood on the impact California’s residents have made during this challenging pandemic year. We will stay on the zoom line to watch the rebroadcast of the global virtual event from 7-8pm and have a closing benediction together before signing off.

Invite your children, neighbors, or a few close friends to share the experience, and make a night of it!

Other frequently asked questions:

Will there be any in-person event in California in November?

Out of abundant concern for our guests, we have decided to pivot this year to a strictly virtual event format, complying with all state or federal orders regarding assembly. If you are comfortable inviting family members, friends, or neighbors into your home, click our Host Home icon for recommendations and downloadable resources to enhance your experience.

Will you be conducting a live or silent auction?

Because we will not be meeting as a large group, we elected not to host an auction this year. We are looking forward to resuming live or silent auctions again in 2021. Please visit our thank you page to donors and vendors who have contributed items, experiences, or services to previous HOPE auctions.

If I can’t make the event the night of October 15, will it be shown at any other time?

The global virtual event will be posted on our website following its conclusion, and anyone who registered for the event—whether or not they were able to attend live—will receive an email with a link to view the event.

If I would like to send funds from my donor-advised fund, where do I direct the funds and how can I ensure they qualify for the match?

Donations can be sent to our Lancaster, PA, mailing address:
HOPE International
227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250
Lancaster, PA 17601

Please note “CADREAMS2020” on the check. To qualify for the match, donations can be sent either prior to the event or within the week following the event. Some generous donors have provided a local California match of $250,000 to assist in meeting our California financial goal of supporting over 53,800 families in our network ($1,000,000). Following the conclusion of the global virtual event, HOPE will also be promoting a week of giving from October 16 - 23 to meet a larger global goal to extend financial access and the hope of the Gospel.

Do I have to pay anything to participate in the California experience?

No, the experience is free to all. If you are interested in hosting at your home, please visit our host icon for more information about getting the host kit online. We encourage you to make a fun night of it, perhaps creating a theme night around the culture of one or more of the HOPE programs (African, Asian, Caribbean, Eastern European, or South American).

Applicant FAQs

General

What does spiritual integration look like on a practical level?

At HOPE, our efforts to love and serve families in poverty are rooted in our allegiance to our Lord and Savior and our desire to see His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Believing that true transformation can only come from a relationship with Jesus Christ, HOPE engages in culturally appropriate discipleship in each of the countries in which we work. HOPE is committed to hiring Christian staff and equipping them to be disciple makers in their communities, and we seek to partner with local churches in each of our areas of operation to provide those we serve with ongoing discipleship and support.

Staff members in the U.S. share in times of prayer and devotions four days a week. Often, individual departments take that a step further. The administration team meets weekly for Bible study and prayer. These are just a few examples of how we encourage one another to grow in our relationships with God.

Can I visit the people HOPE serves?

We offer HOPE Trips throughout the year to several countries of operation, and we’d love for you to join us! Learn more at hopetrips.org.

Where does HOPE serve?

The HOPE network includes HOPE-managed programs and partners in Burundi, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Malawi, Moldova, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, the Republic of Congo, Romania, Rwanda, Uganda, Ukraine, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. HOPE also serves in a country in Asia whose name has been withheld for security.

What is Homes for HOPE (H4H)?

Homes for HOPE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that invites members of the building industry to do what they do best—build a home—to help alleviate global poverty. H4H helps builders recruit their trade partners—subcontractors, suppliers, and consultants—to build a Home for HOPE on a largely pro bono basis (donated labor, materials, and consulting services). Builders contribute their net revenue, typically between $40,000 and $300,000, to HOPE once the home is sold.

How did the partnership between HOPE and Esperanza begin?

After researching opportunities in the Dominican Republic, HOPE decided to partner with an existing organization, Esperanza International, in May 2005. Though structurally distinct organizations, HOPE and Esperanza are like-minded in our commitment to holistic development with a special emphasis on church partnerships and spiritual growth. Many HOPE supporters experience Christ-centered economic development firsthand through a HOPE Trip to visit the men and women Esperanza serves in the Dominican Republic.

How do HOPE’s partners benefit from being a part of the HOPE network?

In many countries, we partner with other organizations to effectively minister to physical and spiritual poverty in underserved areas. We believe that like-minded partnerships can maximize resources, avoid unnecessary duplication, and glorify God. All HOPE-network partners benefit from access to funding, strategic planning, technical assistance, leadership development, capacity building, lateral learning opportunities, spiritual integration guidance and accountability, and prayer support.

Is HOPE tied to a particular church or denomination?

No. We are a non-denominational, Christ-centered nonprofit organization that works in collaboration with many different churches and church denominations.
