How your church can partner with HOPE

Invited into God's redemptive work

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

Scripture teaches that each of us is created in the image of God, filled with potential and worth. As we respond to God’s call to care for our brothers and sisters in poverty, we seek to celebrate their inherent, God-breathed value. But traditional models of charity often emphasize what those in poverty lack—overlooking their unique skills, abilities, and drive. HOPE believes that a scriptural approach affirms the dignity and value of those we seek to help.

In Deuteronomy, God commands His followers to care for “the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow” (24:19) by leaving a portion of their fields unharvested. Rather than simply working harder to provide for those in poverty, the Israelites were to create opportunities for individuals to employ their God-given skills and abilities. When we do for others what they could do for themselves, we unwittingly rob them of the blessing of providing for themselves and their families.

When we are drawn to respond to a particular area of suffering and need, we reflect the heart of our Heavenly Father, who is grieved by all forms of injustice. HOPE’s ministry through Christ-centered microenterprise development addresses the root of many issues—from human trafficking to illiteracy, hunger, and homelessness—by dealing with the underlying causes of poverty and hopelessness. Together we can share the love of God in word and deed, building His Kingdom and growing our faith as we invite Him to work through us.
