Burundi

As recently as 2006, armed conflict raged on in Burundi. Lasting 12 years, the conflict claimed over 300,000 lives and displaced as many as 1.2 million people (nearly a fifth of the population). By 2003, Burundi's per capita GDP was less than half of what it had been before the war began in 1993. HIV/AIDS plagues the nation, with an infection rate of 11.2%. Many families are suffering the effects of poverty and disease, with infant mortality well above the African average and an average life expectancy of only 52 years.

HOPE in Burundi

In 2008, HOPE entered into a partnership with World Relief and World Relief Canada to begin working in Burundi with an existing program named Turame (or to live long and have health). Turame has been in operation since 2004. The program is helping to diversify Burundi's economy, which is highly dependent on agriculture and suffers frequent setbacks due to droughts and other poor growing conditions.
