Countries You Can Help
Afghanistan
Decades of war and conflict have left the people of Afghanistan with few tools to recover and rebuild their country. In 2004 Afghanistan had its first democratic presidential election. Even as the economy slowly improves, over half of the Afghan population continues to live in extreme poverty. The country largely depends on foreign aid and trade with neighboring countries. Afghans continue to experience shortages of clean water, healthcare, housing, and employment opportunities. Women especially face cultural obstacles in pursuing education and in finding opportunities to provide for themselves and their families. The government of Afghanistan is also experiencing challenges as it deals with corruption and addresses international concerns over the country's leading export opium.
HOPE in Afghanistan
Afghan men and women who receive HOPE loans are able to increase their standard of living by beginning microenterprises such as fabric shops, carpet weaving, bakeries, and tailoring. HOPE Afghanistan clients have been able to provide their families with better food, send their children to school, expand their businesses, and contribute to their communities.
